Message from President

From the inception of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, over 100 years ago, we have existed with the spirit that regardless of what we had done in the past, in giving and in service to our community and within our organization, there were always bigger and better works to be done. In that same vein, our chapter’s theme for 2010 and beyond is “Leading the Way to Progressive Heights.”

Established in 1994, Upsilon Alpha Omega is one of more than 900 international Alpha Kappa Alpha chapters. We each work with great vigor and strive toward common goals within our respective communities:

• Promotion of high scholastic achievement and ethical standards
• Improvement of the social stature of our community
• Promotion of togetherness and unity
• Service to all mankind

Upsilon Alpha Omega formed to specifically address and support these needs within the Gwinnett County community and has been fortunate to support these goals each and every year. Since our formation, we have had the opportunity to uphold all that we stand for regarding scholastic achievement through the awarding of more than $100,000 in college scholarships to Gwinnett County high school graduating seniors.

We have contributed to the advancement of the community through several of our programs, including financial literacy education, charitable giving, hands-on support of programs for the homeless and entrepreneurial grants to inspire new businesses to add to the viability of the community. We provide health education and wellness opportunities, mentoring for middle-school girls and volunteer tax preparation assistance through partnerships with VITA.

As a chapter, we highly engage in the political process via voter registration drives and other means that address concerns that incite social awareness on a local and national level.

We are an organization that fosters bonds as we contribute to the community. These tight bonds allow us to work together with a love and passion for what we do. As such, our programs, events and activities are often executed using community partnerships, as is evidenced in our Business Exchange Mixers, Taste of LaJazz, Debutante Cotillion and Scholarship Ball and Little Miss AKA events.

We are, most of all, in service in all that we do, ensuring that we have our fingers on the pulse of our area. We will strategically place our resources, time and energy in projects that will be of utmost benefit to the most pressing needs. Whether it is providing relief for flood victims, supporting Christmas gift drives for local organizations or participating in Adopt-A -Road efforts that support Clean and Beautiful campaigns, we are here to SERVE!

As we Lead the Way to Progressive Heights, please let us know if we can ever partner with you in your community service endeavors or be a resource to make the Gwinnett County community an even more successful and vibrant area. We’d love to work with you to maintain Gwinnett County’s reputation as a community where all residents can thrive.
